EUL Academic Gürler represented the European University of Lefke at the 24th National Parasitology Congress

Asst. Prof. Dr. Emrah Gürler, Head of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, European University of Lefke (EUL), represented the University at the 24th National Parasitology Congress.

Between October 30 and November 2, 2025, Dr. Emrah Gürler participated in the congress held in Bursa, jointly organized by the Turkish Society of Parasitology and the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Medicine at Bursa Uludağ University. He attended the event as an invited speaker and also presented an oral paper during the congress.

During the congress session, Gürler spoke on “The History and Current Situation of Leishmaniasis in Cyprus,” drawing attention to this infectious disease. His oral presentation, titled “Designing Domestic RT-PCR and Sequencing Kits for the Detection and Species Identification of Plasmodium Parasites in Clinical Samples: The Northern Cyprus Experience,” was part of a multi-centered study conducted jointly by the European University of Lefke, Near East University, and the University of Health Sciences (Ankara, Turkey). Gürler noted that the project developed a PCR kit capable of detecting malaria – still one of the world’s most significant infectious diseases- with high accuracy, as well as next-generation sequencing kits that enable species differentiation of malaria parasites. He emphasized that these locally produced kits reduce foreign dependency and make a significant contribution to the healthcare field through accurate diagnosis and species identification.
